Modillon (corbel)

A corbel is a part of a construction protruding from a wall or pilier (pillar), which supports another part of the construction above it (think e.g. of corbels for balconies).
A modillon is a short console, which, placed at regular intervals, supports a corniche (cornice).
Modillons sometimes are quite elaborately sculptured.
This row of modillons supports the corniche of the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Gourdon.
See also corbeau.
