Tailloir (covering plate)

A square or polygonal plate covering a chapiteau (capital); the starting point of an arc (arch) or voûte (vault).
The picture shows a beautifully decorated tailloir as part of the portail (portal) of the Saint-Romain in Saint-Romain-sous-Gourdon.
