Tympan (tympanum)

The often semicircular part of a portail (portal) of a church, supported by a linteau (lintel) and bordered at the top by the voussures (moulding arches) of the portal.
Tympani are often richly decorated with religious representations.
This tympanum adornes the portal of the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Neuilly-en-Donjon (03).
